Course Background

In our first lesson, we will define the term wargame, discuss the differences between computer simulations wargames, and then discuss the main uses of wargames.

You might think of the move “WarGames” with “Ferris Bueller” star Matthew Broderick.

In reality, what you would see if you watched the movie is that the computer is running through different scenarios, so no human decision making here, this is computer simulation. Too bad AI really isn’t this good!

As you go through this lesson’s readings and presentations, try to create your own definition of a Wargame. What are a wargame’s characteristics? What are its benefits? What are its limitations?

By the end of this introductory module, you will:

  • Be able to define a wargame
  • Understand the difference between computer simulations and wargames
  • Be able to discuss the main uses of wargames
